Historia der Passion und Leidens unsers einigen Erlösers und Seligmachers Jesu Christi (1593)

In the 2014, I successfully defended my doctoral essay on Leonhard Lechner’s Passion setting. Since then, I’ve published a peer-reviewed article on Lechner’s masterpiece in The Choral Journal, as well as given multiple presentations on the work at professional conferences.

Over the course of several years, I carefully created a modern edition Lechner’s Passion that draws upon all of my research into this piece. My original plan was to publish my edition, and it even cleared a prestigious publisher’s peer-review process. Then, the COVID pandemic hit, and the prospect of publishing a 115-page score by a rather obscure Renaissance composer became unrealistic. Rather than putting this massive undertaking away on a shelf, I am sharing it here for anyone to use. Just click the button below to download it free of charge.

I hope you enjoy the piece as much as I do. If you end up performing it, please share a recording with me. As of now, no one has ever performed from my edition before.

Leonhard Lechner (c. 1553–1606)
